Diamonds-From ancient times till now

By the early twentieth century, there was an imbalance in the supply and demand of diamonds- They were only used by royals and their prices plummeted because of the oversupply. It is during this time that the South Africa based DeBeers Company used the services of N.W.Ayer for popularizing diamonds in the US. The campaign was so successful that to date most engagement rings come with diamonds on them.

Currently the diamond trade is an oligopoly controlled by the DeBeers group and other international MNCs. They have artificially increased the prices of the diamonds and intend to keep it so for their own vested interests.
